PMOs Don't Work!

I've got to say I've spoken with hundreds of PMO directors and managers and my view is that they just don't work. They don't truly accomplish the theoretical goals of why PMOs were created in the first place. Would love to hear what others are doing regarding their PMOs and how they are taking their project portfolios to the next level of true strategic alignment with the enterprise.

At the same time we may hear that without PMO also there are many runways projects in terms don't work. So damm if you do it and damm if you don't. I would rather do something about it to put proper governance process. Many time the issue is how the PMO business case were created and the process agreed upon don't seem to work for all kinds of initiatives.

Using PMI process as guideline if appropriate governance is put for different size/type of project it has a greater chance of success.
